Why We Fly...

The B29/B24 Squadron was created in the 1970s to operate and support the B-29 Superfortress "Fifi" which was rescued from the China Lake Naval Proving Grounds. Having saved and restored Fifi to flying condition, squadron founder Victor Agather envisioned a group of dedicated individuals who would be responsible for the care, maintenance, and operation of this one-of-a-kind aircraft. In 1976, as part of the CAF, the B-29 Squadron was formed and Fifi introduced the concept of warbird barnstorming traveling to different American cities each year giving the public opportunities to see, hear, touch, learn about, and experience an aircraft that played a pivotal role in American and aviation history.

Fast forward to today from this small start in the 1970s and the squadron has grown to three hundred members from around the world, added additional aircraft, including the equally rare B-24 Liberator "Diamond Lil" and continues to care for, maintain, and operate a variety of rare, unique, and historical American military aircraft, each with their own unique story to tell.

As flying museums, our aircraft provide the public opportunities to interact, tour, and ride in historic aircraft that shaped American and world history in ways no static museum can replicate. Our mission is to continue to care for these rare, flying monuments to freedom and keep them flying through preservation, education, exhibition, and airshows.

As an all-volunteer, non-profit organization our members, volunteers, and supporters are our greatest asset. The Commemorative Airforce (CAF) and the B29/B24 Squadron receives no support from the Federal Government or the United States Air Force. We continue to fly and operate these aircraft to preserve American aviation history, to tell the stories of the brave men and women who sacrificed, flew, maintained, and built these aircraft both on the home front and abroad, and to educate and inspire current and future generations of Americans. The lessons, sacrifices, and history of the 'Greatest Generation' should never be forgotten. Our operations are dependent on donations, volunteers, tours, and ride flight experiences. The CAF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization. Your donations are tax deductible.

Without the generous support of our members, volunteers, donors, supporters, and the general public - the aircraft of the B29/B24 Squadron would be unable to fly and we could not continue our mission.
